HEVC Advance Launches to Rally Critical Mass of Stakeholders to Deliver Next Generation Video Experiences
Looks like the cost of using the HEVC codec just went up…
New HEVC patent pool addresses digital media market demand for efficient and transparent licensing, and balanced commercialization of HEVC technologies
HEVC Advance, an independent licensing administrator company, announces the formation of the HEVC Advance patent pool. The HEVC Advance patent pool will address marketplace demand for an additional licensing option of HEVC essential patents. Utilizing a balanced business model for HEVC IP commercialization, HEVC Advance will provide an efficient and transparent means for accessing and licensing HEVC essential patents. HEVC Advance expects to attract a critical mass of intellectual property (IP) holders, with more than 500 essential patents expected to be available for license at launch, with the number of patents expected to grow significantly.
“The digital media market stands at a pivotal point as innovations like HEVC enable rich next-generation experiences while helping solve industry limitations with delivering that experience,” said HEVC Advance representative Peter Moller. “The market is requiring a different approach to aggregating and making HEVC essential patents available for license. We invite other HEVC patent holders to join the HEVC Advance pool.”
Transforming the industry
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a new industry standard for video compression that forms the foundation for next-generation video experiences. HEVC-enabled technologies are drivers of advancement in the digital media market, generating new opportunities and requirements across the ecosystem. Online service providers, such as OTT (over the top) content and mobile video, benefit from HEVC’s reduced burden on the network and video congestion. Traditional services, such as broadcast,
satellite and cable providers, benefit from improved performance at lower transmission rates and the ability to deliver more content per channel.
The initial list of licensors is expected to include GE, Technicolor, Dolby, Philips and Mitsubishi Electric. Royalty rates and licensing terms will be made available in the second quarter. The HEVC Advance patent pool will formally launch in the third quarter of 2015.
