The ZEISS Touit 2.8/50M is the newest member of the Touit family of lenses. It is a powerful macro lens for compact system cameras (CSC) that also shows its strengths in portraiture.

ZEISS Touit 2.8:50M

Compact system cameras with APS-C sensors are one of the most interesting trends in today’s photography market. More and more photographers are discovering the possibilities compact equipment gives them, also making it a serious alternative to single-lens reflex photography, especially when it is important to keep your equipment light while still fulfilling high demands in imaging performance.

Sensors are becoming increasingly powerful, yet the performance of a sensor always depends on the lens used. So it came as no surprise when ZEISS, as a manufacturer of high-quality optics, in June 2013 came out with the Touit 2.8/12 and Touit 1.8/32, both autofocus lenses with E- and X-mount and both satisfying the optical demands of professionals.

Now, the Touit family is once again being extended, this time with the ZEISS Touit 2.8/50M, filling a gap in the close-up and macro range for APS-C systems. This new ZEISS macro lens offers a magnification power of 1:1, with which the photographed motif appears in its original size on the camera sensor. As a result, the lens makes it possible to visualize details which would otherwise not be seen with the naked eye. The new Touit 2.8/50M follows in very imposing footsteps: ZEISS macro lenses with a magnification power of 1:2 – such as the Makro-Planar T* 2/100 and the Makro-Planar T* 2/50 – have already garnered an excellent reputation in the market for SLR lenses.

In addition to macro photography, which is already found in the name of the Touit 2.8/50M in the letter „M“, the lens also shows its strengths in portraiture and other applications. In landscape photography, for example, the lens enables the photographer to concentrate on certain details of a landscape. With a full-frame-equivalent focal length of 75 mm (crop factor 1.5), you have a moderate telephoto focal length. Here, too, the lens’s enormous versatility pays off. The Touit 2.8/50M is an all-around lens that can cover distances from infinity to a magnification power of 1:1. Thanks to this versatility, the lens harmonizes very well with the flexible applications of compact APS-C system cameras.

ZEISS Touit 2.8:50M Lens

The Touit 2.8/50M has the complex floating elements design from ZEISS. As a result, the lens achieves a consistently high performance right down to the minimum object distance (MOD). The outstanding image quality remains consistent, independent of the focus setting. Two aspheres – lens elements number three and four – make an important contribution to the high image quality. Two other lens elements with low dispersion – lenses number two and nine – ensure the lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberrations are minimized.

An almost-round iris with a total of nine blades creates highlights and a soft, very natural-looking character in the areas outside the focus. Focused objects before a blurry background are clearly accentuated, creating a harmonious bokeh. Excellent sharpness of the image quality across all f-stops rounds off the performance spectrum of the Touit 2.8/50M.

“The new Touit 2.8/50M is an ideal enhancement to the portfolio of photographers who are already using our two other Touit lenses. Owners of APS-C system cameras – with Sony E or Fujifilm X mount – who are looking for a new high-end macro lens will find the perfect answer in the Touit 2.8/50M. Its combination of versatility and high imaging performance make it the ideal choice for close-ups and portraiture alike,” argues Dr. Michael Pollmann, Program and Product Manager from ZEISS Camera Lenses.
