From Technicolor…
UHD (Ultra High Definition) Alliance
Technicolor has become a founding member of the new UHD (Ultra High Definition) Alliance – a new coalition of companies united to set the bar for next generation video entertainment by establishing new standards to support innovation in video technologies including 4K and higher resolutions, high dynamic range, wider color gamut and immersive 3D audio.
The other founding members of the Alliance joining Technicolor are comprised of leading Hollywood studios, consumer electronics brands, content distributors and post-production companies including; DirecTV, Dolby, Netflix, Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sharp Corporation, Sony Visual Product Inc., The Walt Disney Company, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
The UHD Alliance was created with the consumer in mind; it provides information on premium Ultra-HD content and devices to deliver best-in-class home entertainment. The Alliance is also focused on helping consumers benefit from a seamless, integrated and high-quality Ultra-HD ecosystem from end-to-end. Premium Ultra-HD content and devices will be clearly identified so consumers can easily recognize them in-store.
Vince Pizzica, SEVP Corporate Development and Technology states, “At Technicolor we believe the future of video is about much more than additional pixels—it’s about higher dynamic range and wider color gamuts too. Combined, these technologies will provide consumers with a radical new home viewing experience that has not been seen since we moved from standard definition to high definition. “Technicolor has 100 years of experience pushing imaging technology forward and you can expect to see our innovation at work for consumers in 2015.”
The UHD Alliance aims to ensure that all of the links in the chain – from the production and distribution of content and devices – meet the identified premium quality standards whilst embracing standards that are open and allow flexibility in the market yet give consumers confidence that they can watch the content they want on their devices. In the coming months, the group will convene to outline a technology roadmap for the rapid evolution of UHD technology, worldwide.
Boris Teskler, SEVP Technology elaborated, “We believe no company today can go it alone if they want to facilitate innovation and progress across the entirety of the content value chain, and the UHD Alliance embraces this approach. We’ve joined the Alliance in support of a collaborative framework to define open standards. This framework will facilitate innovation, promote industry integration, and ultimately ensure consistency and quality across new UHD and HDR content regardless of the content provider or the device.”
Pizzica continued, “As the only company in the world that spans the entire workflow of video content, we’re creating next generation video products and services for our customers in production, post production, encoding, delivery and display that will deliver on the UHD Alliance promise. We’ll be launching specific offerings in each of these areas through 2015.”
