An interview from the 2014 International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam with Peter Yabsley of Canon Europe. Canon is a major manufacturer of 35mm, APS, point-and-shoot, and digital cameras, cinema cameras, lenses, and accessories. In this interview Peter talks with us about the Dual Pixel Auto Focus update, the new CINE-SERVO 17-120mm lens, the brand new Canon XF205 Camcorder and a firmware update to the Cinema EOS line that supports the BT.2020 Color Space.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a groundbreaking technology from Canon that unlocks the potential of Live View, changing forever the way users will capture video and still images with a DSLR camera. Dual Pixel CMOS AF powers incredibly smooth and consistent autofocus – like that of a camcorder – so focus transitions are natural and subjects remain locked in even as they move. It also enables phenomenally accurate and faster-than-ever autofocus through an LCD monitor, allowing the user to realize the unique compositional freedom of angle that Live View is capable of providing. And the compatibility of Dual Pixel CMOS AF with over 103 Canon EF lenses empowers the user with exceptional optical tools for nearly limitless creative options. All these remarkable advances are possible thanks to an innovative technological design. For the first time in an EOS camera, the individual pixels on the CMOS sensor are capable of both capturing light and performing phase-difference detection autofocus.
The CINE-SERVO 17-120mm T2.95 lens provides cinematographers and broadcast operations with a compact, lightweight design (only 6.4 lbs.) using Canon optical elements, while offering outstanding performance and reliability in professional shooting environments. The lens also features a high 7x zoom magnification, wide focal length range of 17mm to 120mm, a 180º smooth rotating focus ring and 4K Sensor Coverage. Acknowledging that broadcasters often need to control zoom, focus and iris/aperture in different ways than filmmakers, Canon has developed this zoom lens with full external servo control for drama, documentary and other broadcast productions.
The Canon XF205 HD Camcorder is a compact, ergonomically friendly camera that is suitable for traditional multi-camera productions as well as ENG/event style coverage, independent and documentary filmmaking. The camera features a 1/2.84" CMOS sensor that captures 1920 x 1080 video at various frame rates up to 59.94p, including a 24p mode for a more cinematic feel. The integrated Canon 20x HD Optical zoom lens has a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 26.8 to 576mm and features an 8-bladed iris to render highlights in a more natural manner. Individual gear rings for focus, zoom, and iris on the lens itself provide you a natural way to make manual adjustments.
Canon’s Cinema EOS Digital Cinema Cameras and lenses have earned widespread praise and the C500 and C500 PL, which capture 4K video in stunning detail, can now be enhanced even further with a new firmware upgrade offering support for BT.2020, the recently-defined colour space for Ultra High Definition (UHD) video, the next-generation broadcast standard.
Supporting end-to-end BT.2020 workflow, Canon’s DP-V3010 4K professional reference display will also be upgraded to support content shot in BT.2020. BT.2020 input signals will be mapped to the native colour space of the DP-V3010 for output, implementing the latest derivation of luminance and colour-difference signal specified by the International Telecommunications Union, to ensure that images are displayed with the widest possible colour gamut and the greatest possible accuracy.
