Cinescopophilia FAQ

Have a question about Cinescopophilia, the content, or the shop? You’re in the right place. If you can’t find what you’re after, head to the Contact page and we’ll get back to you.

Cinescopophilia is an independent cinema gear publication run by working camera professionals. We cover camera news, manufacturer announcements, filmmaking gear, and professional techniques for the people who actually use this stuff on the job. We do gear reviews from time to time. When gear excels or falls short in the field, we highlight the voices and publications that cover it best.

Cinescopophilia is a portmanteau. Cine from cinema, and scopophilia, which in cinema theory refers to the long gaze or the love of looking. Put them together and you get a word that sums up exactly what this place is about. It is also a deliberate mouthful that you will not forget in a hurry.

Cinescopophilia launched in 2010 and built a loyal readership of camera operators, cinematographers, and filmmakers over the years. After a break while G was out in the field shooting reality TV across the Australian Outback and working in the mining and construction sectors, the site relaunched in 2026 with a publication, a merch store, and a lot more experience behind it.

G is the main dork that runs Cinescopophilia. He has spent 31 years working behind the lens across broadcast television, documentary, and production. That includes 20 years mainly specialising in covering natural disasters for TV news, working as an editor on three Olympic Games, seven years shooting reality TV across the Australian Outback, and three and a half years filming for government, corporate, and mining sectors. Cinescopophilia was built on the knowledge of what gear survives the elements and what shots tell the story.

Most camera publications are written by people who have never had to make a shot work under real pressure in difficult conditions. Cinescopophilia is built on 31 years of field experience and the editorial principle that manufacturers can sponsor the platform, not the opinion.

Anyone who enjoys the craft and the process of being involved in filmmaking. It does not matter the size of the set, it is all about the passion for getting the right shot with the best gear. Cinescopophilia is for camera operators, drone pilots, cinematographers, and passionate filmmakers who want to make informed decisions on their next gear purchase and stay across what is happening in the industry.

We do from time to time. Cinescopophilia is a publication that covers all camera news, gear releases, and professional techniques. Where gear stands out or falls short, we will also cover the people and publications that put gear through its paces and cover it in depth as well. Contact Cinescopophilia if need to know more.

Independently. The editorial principle is simple. Manufacturers can sponsor the platform, not the opinion. Coverage decisions are made on relevance and value to the audience, not on commercial relationships.

Regularly. Camera and gear news moves fast and we move with it. Subscribe to the newsletter to get new posts and content direct to your inbox.

From time to time we use AI tools to enhance productivity and assist with content production. All editorial decisions, opinions, and the overall voice of Cinescopophilia remain G’s own. If you spot something that doesn’t read right, hit us up. More than happy to fix any site errors.

Cinescopophilia is produced with care but we are human. All content is published in good faith under an errors and omissions accepted basis. If you spot an error or an omission we are genuinely happy for you to point it out via the Contact page and we will address it promptly.

The Cinescopophilia shop carries camera apparel and on-set essentials. The current drop includes the Best Damn Cameraman and Best Damn Camerama’am collections, with the f/0.7 edition as the flagship release. More designs and film and TV job position apparel are in the pipeline.

The f/0.7 edition is Cinescopophilia’s first merch drop and includes The Best Damn Cameraman and Best Damn Camerama’am release in the current drop and it is a tip of the hat to the Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/0.7 legendary ultra-fast lens. If you know, you know.

Camerama’am is a portmanteau coined for the Cinescopophilia apparel range. For decades cameraman was the default term regardless of who was behind the lens. Camerama’am is a correction and a nod to the history of women in cinematography and how the language of a set has evolved over the years. The craft belongs to everyone who earns it.
